A Shanti Havan is a sacred fire ceremony (havan) performed to invoke peace, harmony, and spiritual purification. The word "Shanti" means peace, and the purpose of this ritual is to eliminate negativity, reduce stress, remove obstacles, and bring peace and tranquility to the environment and individuals. It is often done in families, homes, or at specific occasions like the start of a new venture, before a wedding, or during a time of illness or distress.

Items Required for Shanti Havan

Havan Kund (Sacred Fire Pit):
A small, clean, and sacred fire pit made of copper, clay, or steel. The fire is lit in this pit, and offerings are made to it.

Samagri (Sacred Offerings):
This is a mixture of various ingredients for the havan, which may include:

  • Ghee (clarified butter)
  • Sandalwood powder
  • Rice
  • Puffed rice
  • Barley
  • Hemp seeds
  • Herbs and medicinal plants (like basil, neem leaves, or tulsi leaves)
  • Honey
  • Sugar

Agni (Sacred Fire):
A small flame (typically kindled by rubbing two sticks together or using a match) is used to ignite the fire in the havan kund.

Chanting Materials:

  • Vedic Mantras or Shanti Mantras: Recite specific mantras that invoke peace and blessings.
  • Rudraksha mala or Japa mala for chanting the mantras.

Flowers:
Fresh flowers are offered to the sacred fire during the ritual.
